The ferrite core is specifically designed to balance the core area and the core window used for the copper winding. Core area correlates to the saturation current rating of the inductor whereas the copper winding correlates to the temperature rise current rating via the DC resistance. This core design allows for designs resulting in a balance in these current ratings which results in a more optimized overall design.
