Safety Certified Capacitors are classified either as X or Y capacitors. An X capacitor is for use in line-to-line applications where there is no danger of electric shock to personnel if there is a component failure. A Y capacitor is for use in line-to-ground applications where a failure could lead to danger of electric shock. There is also a number associated with the letter classification that indicates the specific rating of the part as shown in the table. Additionally, Johanson Dielectrics offers X2/Y3 and X1/Y2 rated capacitors. A capacitor rated X1/Y2 is suitable for use as a Y2 capacitor in line-to-ground applications or as an X1 capacitor in line-to-line applications.
