Shown here is the PWM modulator technique, with two different current decay modes that are possible, the slow decay and fast decay. It is possible to change the decay mode by means of the logic level applied on a dedicated pin. In fast decay mode, the voltage applied to the winding of the motor is reversed during off time. The discharge time is fast because the voltage applied to the motor winding is close to the full voltage supply, but with reversed polarity with respect to the on time. In slow decay mode, the motor winding is instead short-circuited to the voltage supply, and the discharge time of the motor winding is slow because the voltage across it is almost zero.
