Meet the Compute Module 5: What’s New and Improved?

Raspberry Pi recently unveiled the exciting Compute Module 5, a remarkable step forward in technology. This new module features impressive enhancements over the Compute Module 4, including a peak eMMC bandwidth of up to 500 MBps, an astounding four times faster than its predecessors! To match this speed, the Compute Module 5 series introduces a 16GB RAM option, empowering users to push boundaries like never before. Plus, with the addition of a 64GB eMMC option, the possibilities for larger applications are limitless. While embracing innovation, the decision was made to retire the 1GB RAM and 8GB eMMC options, making way for a brighter future. Let’s explore the specifications of these groundbreaking modules and discover how they can ignite creativity and inspire new solutions.

The CM5 includes several changes to its features compared to previous models. Notably, it no longer supports Composite Video Output, RUN_PG, or the 2-lane MIPI Interface. Instead, it offers two USB 3.0 ports, which have replaced the 2-lane MIPI interface, providing enhanced connectivity options.

Raspberry Pi is excited to introduce a range of new accessories designed to enhance your experience with the innovative new modules, ensuring you can fully harness their powerful features.

Development Kit

The first of these new accessories is the Compute Module 5 Development Kit.

This aluminum heatsink is designed to optimize heat transfer from key components, including the CPU, memory, and wireless module (if applicable), as well as eMMC (if present). It's important to note that the increased performance of the CM5 model generally results in higher operating temperatures compared to the CM4. As such, utilizing this heatsink, complete with thermal pads, can significantly enhance cooling efficiency and maintain optimal performance.

As you embark on your next Raspberry Pi project, consider integrating the CM5 to elevate your work to new heights. Don't miss out on the opportunity to transform your project!
